CHAPTER 16

As the engines of the plane roared beneath him, Gareth thought back to the night before. Her eyes, usually filled with an intelligence not known to modern man, had been wide and fearful, like Leah had been named as the next victim to face the wrath of a long dead killer.

He’d held her in his arms last night, offering her the only comfort he knew how to give. When she’d finally drifted off, Gareth had remained awake, listening to the quiet hum coming from his knapsack. He cursed himself, Crowley, the heavens—everyone he could think of—for letting him pull this woman into the clutches of a devil’s joke. He beat himself black and blue inside for having the nerve to thrust Leah into this horrible mess. He even thought about gathering his things in the middle of the night and making a run for it. She’d be so much safer, far away from this twisted quest, back in her precious library. Perhaps she’d been right the first time. Perhaps deep down he was crazy—crazy for ever beginning this journey.

His part had been so easy, following in the footsteps of a millionaire who’d enlisted a man of science to hide six orbs in places of peaceful brilliance. Gareth knew he’d been lucky. His flashbacks had included the great minds of all time, leaning over their books and creating masterpieces that the world would someday base their very existence on. Gareth’s stomach lurched with the turbulent plane. The sights and sounds of 1800’s Whitechapel were going to be far more difficult than a few macabre ghosts who’d been shot by a Winchester rifle.

He’d thought about this all night…how hard this would be on Leah. He’d even left the room after she’d fallen asleep to phone Donovan for his advice. But his friend had been right. There was no abandoning Leah now, not after all she’d given to a man she hardly knew. Donovan had even labeled him a low-life, if Gareth even thought to leave the damsel in distress behind.

Gareth believed him, but he so wanted to be the one to follow in the footsteps of the madman and take the brunt of the horrible visions. Although he knew it wouldn’t work that way. Leah was the bearer of the darkness; the chosen one who would face the worst of humanity. Donovan had reminded him that there had always been two. One dark and one light—each with their own talents—to keep the secret that’d been hidden from mankind for centuries.

Besides that, Gareth knew from the determined look on her face that Leah would board a plane for Whitechapel alone, if she had to. He felt so useless. All he could do was pick up the pieces and hope to God that she was strong enough to survive it.

When morning came, he’d made sure to stand close, hug her, place his arm around her waist, and pull her to his side—anything to let Leah know that she wasn’t alone. He wanted with all his heart to make sure that when she traveled through death she’d hold on to him.
